Senior ULFA leader nabbed in upper Assam

Guwahati, Aug 2: The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) today received another jolt when one of its senior leaders was arrested in upper Assam’s Sibsagar district this evening. 

Debojit Hazarika, superintendent of police, Sibsagar while speaking to northeasttribune.com over telephone informed, “ Bastab Deodhai Phukan joined the outfit in 1988 and was based in Myanmar. He is a member of 28th Battalion of the outfit which is carrying out subversive activities in upper Assam”.  

Bastab was nabbed along with another of his colleagues Dulal Baruah. Another sources informed that Bastab was presently holding the additional responsibility of Finance portfolio for the Sibsagar district.  

Hazarika informed that both the militants were nabbed today from Nopam area under Gaurisagar police station after they succeeded in escaping from a security operation in Khonamukh area under the same police station carried out in the wee hours of August 1 that hauled huge quantity of arms and ammunition including US carbine, 90 rounds of live ammunitions, four magazines, one 9mm pistol and seven rounds of live ammunitions.
