Sudden voter surge alarms district forum

NET News Network

Aizawl Oct 18: The Co-ordination Committee set up to review the current intensive revision of the electoral rolls in Kolasib district has voiced its alarm at the sudden upsurge of new voters in three consitutuencies in the district.

The committee, which sat last Friday in Kolasib under the chairmanship of the district’s deputy commissioner H. Sikhu, who is also the district election officer, decided to go slow on the registration of persons who have come from outside the state and settling here. The committee, on examination of the nearly finished roll revision of the district, said it was alarmed at the growth in voters in some places and expressed its desire for a review of the registration of voters in these places.

The district election officer agreed to review the upsurge of voters but said this should, however, not interfere with the schedule put out by the Election Commission for the completion of the rolls.

According to this latest roll revision, Kawnpui constituency saw an increase of voters by 6.5 per cent, 6 per cent in Kolasib constituency and 9.61 per cent in Bilkhawthlir constituency.
